Listen to "Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows" now!

6/3/2026

I'm excited to finally share a recording of my string quartet Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows.

The piece is inspired by John Koenig's The Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows – a collection of invented words for emotions we all recognize but rarely have a name for. Each movement explores one of these elusive emotional states:

  • etterath – the emptiness that follows the completion of something long awaited.

  • aftersome – the wonder of looking back at the improbable sequence of events that brought you to this moment.

  • allope – the quiet loneliness certain places seem to carry.

  • morii – the urge to preserve a fleeting experience before it slips away.

  • anemoia – nostalgia for a time or place you've never actually known.

My heartfelt thanks to the Neuma Quartet for their sensitive interpretation and to the Szczecin Classic Festival for presenting the world premiere.
